David Hibbett

David Hibbett is a Professor of Biology at Clark University, Worcester, Massachusetts. USA. He received a B.S. in Botany from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and a PhD in Botany from Duke University. He held postdoctoral fellowships at the Tottori Mycological Institute (Japan) and the Harvard University Herbaria. He joined the faculty of Clark Universty in 1999.

Professor Hibbett’s scholarship focuses on evolutionary biology of fungi, particularly mushroom-forming fungi. His research encompasses molecular systematics and evolution, comparative genomics, developmental biology, and paleomycology. He is also interested in principles of biological classification, including rank-free taxonomy and DNA-based species description. Hibbett’s research has been supported by the US National Science Foundation and the US Department of Energy. He has served as President of the Mycological Society of America and Executive Vice President of the Society of Systematic Biologists. He has published over 150 research articles and was designated a Clarivate Analytics/Web of Science Highly Cited Researcher in 2018 and 2020. He is a Fellow of the Mycological Society of America, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study of Harvard University. In 2023, he was appointed as the Andrea B. and Peter D. Klein Distinguished Professor of Clark University.
