Mycologist David Hibbett returns to Boston to celebrate The Complete Fungi — a richly illustrated natural history of a kingdom of 155,000+ species — in conversation with author and naturalist Maria Pinto.
Long Now Boston is glad to co-promote this celebration of The Complete Fungi, hosted by Brookline Booksmith. David Hibbett — who spoke to Long Now Boston in April on Mushrooms, Time, and the Tree of Life — is joined in conversation by Boston-area author and naturalist Maria Pinto.
Occupying an entire kingdom of their own, fungi comprise over 155,000 species that include yeasts, rusts, and molds as well as the more familiar mushrooms and toadstools we see in the wild and on our plates. The Complete Fungi presents a broad and accessible overview of fungal diversity, evolution, and ecology, covering topics from fungal origins and reproduction to the historical and cultural significance of fungi for humankind. Blending stunning illustrations with a lively and engaging text, it's a must for fungi enthusiasts and armchair naturalists alike.

Maria Pinto
Maria Pinto is a Boston-area writer, mycophile, and educator, and the author of Fearless, Sleepless, Deathless: What Fungi Taught Me about Nourishment, Poison, Ecology, Hidden Histories, Zombies, and Black Survival (UNC Press, 2025). She leads regular mycological forays at Harvard's Arnold Arboretum.
David Hibbett
David Hibbett is a Professor of Biology at Clark University, Worcester, Massachusetts. USA. He received a B.S. in Botany from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and a PhD in Botany from Duke University. He held postdoctoral fellowships at the Tottori Mycological Institute (Japan) and the Harvard University Herbaria. He joined the faculty of Clark Universty in 1999.
